Niger

Current Churches & Ministries

BIMI missionaries have served in Niger since 1971. This has been one of our most difficult fields, and staunch Moslems that live nomadic lives populate the desert region where our missionaries work. Conversions have been few and far between, but God is beginning to move in an exciting way in this desert country. Bible translation work has been done for years into the Tamajaq language and now it is being broadcast by radio to a possible listening audience of 2 million people. This weekly broadcast is also heard in Nigeria, Libya, Algeria, and Mali, which have extensive Tamajaq-speaking populations.

Many encouraging reports are coming in as a result of these Bible broadcasts, and the Bible translation work continues along with the preaching and teaching of the Word of God in Agadez and surrounding villages.

Unreached areas/peoples

30 of the 39 people groups in Niger are still unreached – one of these language groups consists of nearly 6 million people, and another unreached group exceeds 3.5 million souls.  With Islam claiming 97% of the people, less than 0.5% are Christian, and half of these are Catholic.

Special projects/opportunities

As the gospel is spread through the radio broadcast and the witness of Christians who are part of nomadic tribes, more missionaries are needed to disciple and to plant churches among new believers.
